Ear pain, (also called otalgia) is a common symptom that can range from mild discomfort to sharp or throbbing pain in one or both ears.
It can be caused by problems within the ear itself (primary ear pain) or by issues in nearby areas such as the throat, jaw, or sinuses (referred ear pain).
Ear pain can be short-term or persistent, depending on the cause.
• Ear infections (outer, middle, or inner ear)
• Fluid buildup behind the eardrum, often due to common cold or allergies
• Earwax blockage
• Changes in air pressure, like during flights (barotrauma)
• Injury from using cotton swabs or inserting objects into the ear
• Dental problems.
• Throat infections (like tonsillitis or pharyngitis) that refer pain to the ear
• Sharp pain in or around the ear
• Fullness or pressure in the ear
• Trouble hearing or muffled sounds
• Fever (especially in children)
• Irritability or trouble sleeping (commonly seen in kids)
• Define the spurce of ear pain by ENT consultation
• Antibiotics, if the pain is due to a bacterial infection
• Ear drops, to relieve pain or treat puter ear infection
• Removing earwax if that's the cause
• Treating underlying conditions, such as allergies, sinus infections, or dental problems
• Warm compress to the affected ear can help relieve discomfort
• If ear pain is severe, persistent, or gets worse over time
• If there is hearing loss, drainage, or a high fever
• If a child under 6 months has ear pain or fever
• If there is pain after an injury or loud noise
• If symptoms do not improve with basic treatment after a few days
